Metal braces vs ceramic braces: which suits you?
Both straighten teeth in the same way. Here’s how they differ in appearance, care and day-to-day life — and how to decide.

If you’ve decided to straighten your teeth with braces, one of the first choices you’ll face is between metal and ceramic. The good news: both are well-established, and both move teeth in essentially the same way. The differences are mostly about appearance, care and personal preference.
What they have in common
Both types use small brackets bonded to the front of the teeth and a thin wire that runs through them. The wire applies gentle, steady pressure, and over time the teeth move into their planned positions. Treatment visits, adjustments and the need for retainers afterwards are much the same.
Metal braces
- Made from stainless steel — strong and durable
- Brackets are typically slightly smaller
- More visible, though many people don’t mind
- A practical choice for a wide range of cases, including complex ones
Ceramic braces
- Clear or tooth-coloured brackets that blend in with your teeth
- Much less noticeable in conversation and photographs
- The small elastic ties can pick up stains from turmeric, tea, coffee and similar foods
- Brackets can be slightly larger and need a little more care
How to decide
For many people, it comes down to how much the appearance of braces matters during treatment. Adults, college students and working professionals often prefer ceramic. Teenagers and people who want the most robust option often choose metal. Your orthodontist may also have a recommendation based on your bite and the movements required.
