Tooth-coloured fillings: what they are and how long they last
How composite fillings repair a cavity, what the appointment is like, and how to make a filling last.
Supriya Multispeciality Dental Clinic, Published

A filling repairs a tooth that has been damaged by decay or a small fracture. Tooth-coloured fillings, also called composite fillings, are made from a resin that is matched to the shade of your tooth.
What happens at the appointment
- The area is numbed with a local anaesthetic if needed
- Decay is removed and the tooth is cleaned
- The filling material is placed in layers and hardened with a blue light
- The filling is shaped and polished so your bite feels natural
Why fill a cavity early
A small cavity can be repaired with a small filling. Left alone, decay grows towards the nerve, and the tooth may then need a root canal treatment or a crown. Many cavities cause no pain at first, which is why regular check-ups matter.
How long fillings last
With good care, tooth-coloured fillings often last many years. How long depends on the size of the filling, where it is in the mouth, your bite and habits such as grinding, and how well the area is kept clean.
Making a filling last
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth
- Limit sugary snacks and drinks between meals
- Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, pens or bottle caps
- Keep up regular check-ups so edges and wear can be monitored
